After finding that Maya and Lauren were watching TV and eating pizzaâjust as Daria had told him they would be when heâd updated herâWarner had tried Aelia next.
She hadnât answered, exactly as Daria had said she wouldnât. Daria had also told him that Aelia was fine, just undergoing some questioning with Althea present.
That left Jenny to call.
âHello, there,â said the reporter on the other end of the phone. Sheâd picked up almost quicker than heâd expected. âI admit I wasnât expecting you to call. I havenât heard from you at all since our dinner.â
Warner had the feeling that there was a lot more being said in those words than heâd want to consider. All the way up to the possibility that she was mad he didnât do anything other than talk, eat dinner, and then leave.
Heâd done everything in his power to keep it completely mundane. The absolute blandest, most normal dinner that could happen.
All to protect the idea of Bodil remaining with him.
âYes, well, I already have my hands full. Having three or four girlfriends makes my life a bit of a game of hot potato,â Warner admitted. He wasnât about to apologize for not trying to include her in that game. But he would at least explain why he didnât.
âI⦠see. Okay. That makes a lot of sense,â said Jenny. Sounding somewhat surprised and also unsure. âI mean⦠were you at least interested?â
Apparently, it was the idea that I didnât even try that is bothering her?
Thatâs kinda odd, isnât it?
âVery. Youâre extremely pretty and intelligent, not to mention interesting. But for some reason, I donât think youâd fit in completely with the rest of my group.
âAnd Iâm not willing to risk them.â
âAh, alright. I get it. But you were interested?â
I just said that I was.
âYes. I was interested.â
âHm. Okay. Okay, yes.â
Strange. Anyway.
âI wanted to call you because Iâve been feeling some strange changes in the city,â Warner said, leaning back in his chair. âI wanted to see what you knew or if you could provide me with some information.â
âStrange changes?â Jenny asked.
âThereâs a tension in the air. And thereâs a lot more injustice going around at the moment. Any thoughts? Ideas?â
âI⦠are you being serious?â
âYes? Why wouldnât I be?â
Jenny let out a long sigh as if she was suffering.
âItâs because of what Yellow Eyes did. He gutted the two groups that held almost everyone else back. In check,â Jenny answered in a tired voice. âThe Weres and the Vamps were both knocked down so many pegs that theyâre just⦠middle-of-the-pack groups now. Barely so. Ever since I started digging⦠my boss has been filling me in on the Para world. Apparently, Para-news is also a thing.â
âOkay?â Warner prompted. He really didnât understand.
âYellow Eyes created a power vacuum in the controlling majority. While they were certainly worthy of⦠correction⦠those same people held back a lot of what kept the truly awful from surfacing. And thatâs whatâs happening now.â
âI see,â Warner said, finally getting an idea of what she was talking about.
